Loot Vault

Prepare loot in advance. Reveal it when the players actually find it.

Loot Vault is a loot and investigation management module for Foundry Virtual Tabletop.

Instead of building rewards after an encounter ends, the GM can prepare loot containers in advance, store them in an archive, edit them whenever necessary, and reveal them to players at the right moment.

Treasure chests, bodies, hidden compartments, abandoned camps, crime scenes, locked drawers, ruined laboratories, or anything else your players might search can be prepared before the session begins.

Loot Vault keeps those discoveries ready until you need them.

Build Your Loot

The GM-only Loot Builder lets you prepare complete loot entries before they are shown to players.

Each loot entry can contain:

  • Items added directly from Foundry through drag and drop
  • Multiple currency types
  • A custom background image selected through Foundry's file browser
  • Descriptions and GM-prepared information
  • Multiple Investigation sections
  • Separate Investigation difficulties and results
  • Custom Investigation descriptions written by the GM

Nothing needs to be generated automatically.

You decide exactly what exists, what can be discovered, and what the players learn.

Prepare Investigations

Loot does not always need to be obvious.

A single location can contain several things worth investigating.

Create multiple Investigation entries inside the same loot record and define each one independently.

For example, a searched room might contain:

  • An obvious pouch of coins
  • A hidden compartment beneath a floorboard
  • A bloodstain requiring closer examination
  • A concealed document
  • A weapon with an unusual marking

Each Investigation can have its own difficulty and description, allowing the GM to decide what information becomes available depending on the players' actions and rolls.

Loot Vault does not write these clues for you.

The GM remains fully in control of the investigation and its narrative context.

Store Everything in the Vault

Prepared loot entries are saved in the Loot Vault archive.

You can create them long before they are needed and keep them available for future sessions.

From the archive, the GM can:

  • View prepared loot
  • Edit existing entries
  • Open previously created loot at any time
  • Reveal loot to players when appropriate
  • Reuse prepared discoveries during the session
  • Manage stored loot without rebuilding it from scratch

This means loot no longer has to be tied directly to the moment combat ends.

Prepare it when you design the encounter.

Reveal it when the players actually discover it.

Reveal Loot to Players

When the party searches the right location, the GM can open a saved Loot Vault entry and show it to the players.

Players see the loot prepared for that discovery while the GM maintains control over the underlying entry.

This makes Loot Vault useful far beyond ordinary treasure containers.

Use it for:

  • Enemy inventories
  • Treasure rooms
  • Hidden caches
  • Crime scenes
  • Investigation rewards
  • Secret compartments
  • Abandoned camps
  • Dungeon rooms
  • Quest rewards
  • Documents and evidence
  • Environmental discoveries

The loot exists independently from combat and can be revealed whenever the story requires it.

Use Foundry Items Directly

Items can be added to Loot Vault using Foundry's normal drag-and-drop workflow.

Drag an item into the Loot Builder and include it as part of the prepared discovery.

There is no need to manually rewrite item names or maintain a separate item database.

Loot Vault is designed to work inside the Foundry workflow you are already using.

Currency Support

Loot is not limited to a single Gold value.

Loot Vault supports multiple currency entries so the GM can prepare rewards using the currencies appropriate to the game being played.

A stash might contain several different denominations alongside ordinary items and investigation discoveries.

Control the Presentation

Each loot entry can include its own visual presentation.

Choose a background image directly through Foundry's file browser and use it to give important discoveries their own identity.

A noble's locked strongbox, an alchemist's laboratory, an ancient tomb, and a bandit cache do not have to look like the same generic loot window.

Built for Preparation

Loot Vault is designed around one principle:

Loot should be prepared when the encounter is designed, not assembled while the players are waiting.

Create discoveries during session preparation.

Store them in the Vault.

Edit them whenever your plans change.

Then reveal them when the players find them.
